Filter conditions in reports

When analyzing your survey, filters are useful tools to compare different target groups. Filters can be based on:

  • Interview variables, such as the completion date of the interview, the status and language of the interview.
  • Survey attributes: these are the answers provided by the respondent to certain questions.
  • Custom variables used in a value assignment in a survey.
  • Sample or panel variables (System Member Fields), such as Email and Last Name, whose data are stored in the appropriate sample or panel.
  • Custom member variables: These are the additional variables you have added to a sample or panel.
  • URL variables.

Using filters, you can set which data from your surveys you want to view in your dashboard (online report) and any downloadable reports (e.g. PDF, Excel). The more filter conditions you set, the less data will be shown in your dashboard and reports. The set filter conditions can be adapted anytime and at your convenience.

Example

Using the drop-down button (1) at the end of the variable field, a list is opened from which you can select a variable type, e.g. Interview (2). After having clicked on a variable type, an overview listing all available variables, e.g. Interview language (3), will be revealed.

If you select this variable, you can set the language, e.g. English, in which the participants answered the corresponding survey. Once this filter condition has been set, your dashboard and all downloadable reports will contain only filtered data. Only the results of the participants with English as the survey language will be displayed. This applies to all questions of the survey which are displayed on the right side of the Online Report screen.

In the response statistics of the Online Report screen, you can observe the effect of a filter condition.

  • If you do not set a filter condition, the results are, for example, those of 153 participants (see the All interviews column group) who have completed the survey.
  • If you set one filter condition (e.g. Interview language), the results are only those of 87 participants (see the In report included column group) who have completed the survey.

Similarly, you can create a second filter condition. For example, after you have selected the Survey attributes variable type via the drop-down button, you can select the question below for which you want to specify an age.

For example, if you enter the value Is less than 45 for the question What’s your age, only the results of participants with English as the survey language AND age < 45 will be displayed in your dashboard and reports.

In the response statistics of the Online Report screen, you can observe the effect of two filter conditions.

  • If you do not set a filter condition, the results are, for example, those of 153 participants (see the All interviews column group) who have completed the survey.
  • If you set two filter conditions (e.g. Interview language & Age), the results are only those of 51 participants (see the In report included column group) who have completed the survey.

You can define multiple filter conditions to study their effect. For example, in the same way as described above, you can include a custom variable attribute as a condition. These variables are used in value assignments in surveys.

In the ColorTypeString custom variable you can, for example, specify that the corresponding value has to be Is equal to Female. If you have specified this, only the results of the participants will be displayed in your dashboard and reports, for which the following conditions have been specified:

  • English as survey language
  • Age < 45
  • ColorTypeString is Female

Note: A filter condition can be deleted from the screen using the bin icon (circled in red).

In the response statistics of the Online Report screen, you can ultimately observe the effect of three filter conditions.

  • If you do not set a filter condition, the results are, for example, those of 153 participants (see the All interviews column group) who have completed the survey.
  • If you set three filter conditions (e.g. Interview language, Age & ColorTypeString), the results are only those of 7 participants (see the In report included column group) who have completed the survey.
