Choose a segmentation option
Pivot tables support three segmentation options:
- Table segmentation applies segmentation to the complete table.
- Column segmentation creates separate columns for segment values.
- Row segmentation creates separate rows for segment values.
Row and column segmentation provide more flexibility when you need the table structure to adapt to your data or combine different segmentations.
When to use table segmentation
Use table segmentation for standard crosstabs when one segmentation should apply to the complete table.
For example, use table segmentation to compare the results of one question across a single segment, such as gender or age group.
When to use row segmentation
Use row segmentation when you expect many different segments to display in rows that can change over time.
For example, if a table shows a statistic for each client, row segmentation can automatically add rows when new clients appear in the data.
When to use column segmentation
Use column segmentation when you want to combine two different segmentations in one table.
For example, you can segment your matrix statements’ mean results by both gender and age group in one table.
Where segmentation is available
The available segmentation options depend on how you create or edit the Pivot table:
- Table Wizard and Simple pivot table support table segmentation.
Choose how segments are created
The Segmentation type setting defines how Survalyzer creates the segments.
- Variable creates segments from the values of a selected variable.

For variable-based table, column, and row segmentation, available segments visibility depends on the distinct values in the raw data. Before survey responses are collected, no segments are displayed. Segments appear automatically when the corresponding values become available in the data.
- Time creates segments based on time periods and date-based variables.

- Condition creates custom segments based on conditions that you define. Condition-based segmentation is available only for table segmentation.

Condition-based table segmentation works differently to variable and time-based. Because you define the conditions yourself, these segments are independent of the values in the raw data and therefore are are always visible.
Add table segmentation with Table wizard
Table wizard guides you through the main table setup and creates the required table structure automatically. In the Segments step you can configure table segmentation.
For example, you can display Contract duration by Gender.

- In Segments, select Variable based segmentation.
- Select Gender as the segmentation variable.
- Keep the Total segment enabled if you want to include results for all respondents in addition to the gender segments.
- Select Contract duration as the question to display in the table.
The generated table displays the Contract duration answer options in rows and automatically creates separate column groups for each available Gender value. If the total segment is enabled, the table also includes an All column.
Each segment contains the selected measures, such as Count and in %.

For more information about creating tables with Table wizard, see Create a pivot table with Table wizard.
Add table segmentation in Pivot table settings
You can also add table segmentation to an existing Pivot table from the Pivot table sidebar.
In this example, the table displays Contract Duration answer options in rows and uses Count as the measure.

- Add Table segmentation by Gender.
- Under Table segmentation, configure:
- Segmentation type: Variable
- Segmentation variable: Gender
- Add total segment: selected
Survalyzer applies the segmentation to the complete table and creates separate result groups for the available values of the selected variable.
In this example, the table includes Male, Female, and Divers groups. When Add total segment is selected, it also includes an All group with results for all respondents.

Add row and column segmentation
Use row and column segmentation when you need a more flexible table structure, for example when you want one variable to define columns and another to define rows.
Add column segmentation
1. Create a Pivot table.

2. Under Columns, click Add segmentation.

3. Configure the column label.

Survalyzer adds the dynamic {SegmentLabel} placeholder to the column label. The placeholder is replaced with the label of each segment.
Keep {SegmentLabel} in the label and add the measure name after it. For example:
{SegmentLabel} Mean.Removing {SegmentLabel} can cause all segmented columns to display the same heading.
Configure the segmented column

Open the settings for the segmented column and configure the value that Survalyzer calculates for each segment.
In the example:
- Calculated column: selected
- Segmentation type: Variable
- Segmentation variable: Wave
- Aggregator: Mean
- Base variable: SAT
- Column is sortable: selected
The Mean aggregator requires a numeric variable. If the selected variable contains text or categorical values without numeric values, Survalyzer can’t calculate the mean correctly.
Add row segmentation

- Go to the row configuration section.
- Click Add Segmentation.
- Configure:
- Segmentation type: Variable
- Segmentation variable: Country
- Base variable: Take from column
Survalyzer creates a separate row for each available value of the selected segmentation variable. For example, if you select Country, the table creates rows for the available countries in the data.
Check the result
When the configuration is complete, click All data.
Check that:
- Each selected column segment is displayed.
- Each selected row segment is displayed.
- Column headings contain the segment label and measure name.
- A mean value is displayed for each available combination.
